Today, the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) voted on a resolution supporting our European Citizens’ Initiative My Voice, My Choice: for safe and accessible abortion!
Support came from Members of the European Parliament belonging to five different political groups — the Socialists & Democrats, Renew, The Left, The Greens, and the European People’s Party.
And Nika Kovač said after the vote:
“We saw what we witnessed during the signature collection across Europe – freedom of choice and reproductive rights are not issues that divide, but ones that unite people across political beliefs, nationalities, professions, religions, and generations.”
What’s next? The committee vote will be followed by a plenary vote in Strasbourg in about a month, where all 720 MEPs will decide on the resolution.
Abir Al-Sahlani, a Swedish MEP and rapporteur of the resolution, emphasized the core message of the initiative:
“Body autonomy belongs to women, not to politicians, not to the government, but to women. It’s time our citizens have equal rights.”
